face paint // festival style

After looking at a lot of photos of people with their faces painted I've come to the conclusion that it looks pretty dumb on most of us (kids and rock stars excluded even though they look creepy most of the time too). The lucky few who can pull it off:

Models. Best done in an editorial setting.

Hippies. Alright maybe I should have said gorgeous hippies.

Holi Festival goers. This could be you! God that looks fun.

batman // style

Batman is my favorite movie. It was one of the few VHS tapes we had in our house growing up and I must have watched that movie over 100 times.  The Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Tim Burton combo can't really be beat.

When I first saw Zoe Karssen's bat t-shirt I thought I have to have it and then I saw that it cost $90 so I think I'm going to make my own.

T-shirts clockwise from top left: Zoe Karssen in black and white, Junk Food, Marc Jacobs, Batman shirt.

natasha // ms. khan if u r nasty

Continuing friday's post about the pioneers of festival fashion; today we have another ground breaker in the arena, Bat for Lashes lead singer Natasha Khan. Not many people manage to really rock face paint at a show, much less as an everyday lifestyle like this.

Ahh, those bangs, those eyes, that skeleton suit...no wonder a few years later we still want to look exactly like this.

natural born killer // juliette lewis

For Friday the 13th we are celebrating an icon on the fringe of fashion who has to be considered one of the innovators of modern festival style.

The facepaint, feathers and headband look sure seems to have blanketed the festival scene for a while thanks to chicks like Juliette Lewis who just looked so hot rocking it. It works so well on the girl because she brings a naturalness to it that is sometimes hard to come by when your face is covered in glitter (ahem, Ke$ha).

flashback // rollerskate

This blog is not advocating the use of roller skates (if you are old enough to know what they are) you will probably hurt yourself. I just felt compelled to give some props to these bad ass seventies skaters teaching us a lesson or two about how to get down in the heat.

In the depths of summer you shouldn't be worrying about your hair and makeup and all that junk, the humidity will just mess it up anyways, so throw on some short shorts, a t-shirt and some tube socks and go get crazy in the streets.

i fink u freeky // alexander wang

Thank You Alexander Wang for introducing me to Die Antwoord...and for your collaboration with Linda Farrow even though I can't find a pair of those sunglasses anywhere. If anyone has a spare pair please let me know.

black and white // summer style

Black and white for summer can be so refreshing after the parade of brights you see everywhere. I love the geometric print which BCBG came out with this season as seen in the ad above and being rocked double time in the blog Late Afternoon. And in the blog Song of Style the Pencey sleeveless shirt pulls off the same breezy black and white look.

snakeskin 7.9.12

Limited Edition Coach.

Snakeskin is hard to pull off in large doses. Rihanna does not have to worry about this since she is a goddess and can wear whatever Liberace inspired getup she wants. If you are not Rihanna and are craving some more subdued snakeskin Coach can help you out.

I've never really been into Coach until I went searching for the limited edition tote by James Nares with those beautiful sweeping painted strokes on them and discovered it in the mens section (and that the price was over $700!).

Go check out the Coach men's shop for these luxe limited edition snakeskin pieces. Pricey yes, but also timeless.
